Are you familiar with Northern Cyprus cuisine? Here's a list for you to try the 8 most popular dishes in Northern Cyprus.
1. Şiş kebap
Kebab is a term that covers a wide variety of street food, but the most famous is skewered şiş kebap. Traditionally, a kebab is made of beef or lamb, but today diners can choose from a wider selection of meat, fish, poultry and also vegetables. Şiş Kebap is grilled over charcoal and served on a skewer.
2. Baklava
Already dating back to the Ottoman Empire, baklava is one of the most iconic Turkish dishes, and a must for anyone with a sweet tooth. This layered pastry and unforgettable Mediterranean dessert is loaded with nuts and covered in syrup and ground pistachios. Baklava can be found in most bakeries and supermarkets, but it is best freshly baked.

3. Döner
Another famous kebab, the döner, offers a similar selection in terms of different meats. It is seasoned with herbs and spices and cooked on a vertical, rotating spit. Fresh pieces of meat are served in a bread wrapper with salad and garlic or spicy sauces.
4. Köfte
Turkish meatballs come in all shapes and sizes and can be eaten as street bites, dipped in plain yogurt or served with rice and salad. Different regions of Turkey have developed their own special varieties, such as Izgara Köfte, which is served with grilled peppers, rice and bread, or Çiğ Köfte, which is eaten raw.

5. Pide
Pide is commonly known as "Turkish pizza". Like its Italian cousin, pide is a flat dough topped with cheese and meat and vegetables, and baked in a stone oven. The choice of toppings is practically limitless, making the pide and its leaner counterpart, the lahmacun, ideal for vegetarians or diners with other dietary needs.

6. Sea Food
Since we are on an island in the middle of the Mediterranean sea, it's quite abvious that fresh seafood dishes are popular here. You may start with mezes as starters, having a variety of different sea foods, and then have fresh grilled sea bream or sea bass as a main course.
7. Meze
If you're having trouble choosing from the menu, choose a selection of traditional, cold dishes. A typical meze includes even 20 different varieties, from beans and salads to sauces and spreads, and is served with bread and drinks.
8. Halloumi, or hellim in Northern Cyprus
This cheese is a semi-hard, unripened, brine cheese made from a mixture of goat's, sheep's and sometimes cow's milk. It has a high melting point, so it can be easily fried or grilled. This feature also makes it a popular meat substitute.
